5-Hydroxy-1-methylhydantoin, a creatinine metabolite, is reported to be a hydroxyl radical scavenger. 5-Hydroxy-1-methylhydantoin is a novel antioxidant compound that completely inhibits the response of the B2-kinin receptor (B2KR) to high glucose (25 mM) stimuli in VSMC, and has also been shown to attenuate the effects of BK on VSMC remodeling. 5-Hydroxy-1-methylhydantoin inhibits BK-induced increases in MAPK phosphorylation and attenuates increased levels of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) protein in VSMC.
