Depending on the structure, they cover both the visible spectrum and infrared wavelengths. Cyanine3, Cyanine5 and Cyanine7 are popular cyanine dyes, especially Cyanine3 and Cyanine5 are commonly used for 2 color detection. The Cyanine3 dye fluoresces yellow-green (ex/em = 550/570), while Cyanine5 fluoresces in the red region (ex/em = 650/670 nm). This non-sulfonated cyanine is insoluble in water and is mainly used to label oligonucleotides, peptides, and other small molecules. Cy5NS has the same chemical and spectroscopic properties as Quasar670 (Biosearch).
