X-GAL is a colorless compound until it is cleaved by beta-galactomidase, after which X-GAL becomes an insoluble and detectable blue compound, which makes X-GAL useful in techniques such as blue-white screening for bacterial cloning. X-GAL can also be used to detect beta-galactosidase activity.
